The Madonna Inn-sane

On our way home from the lake this weekend, we dropped by the historic Madonna Inn on the Central Coast. We've driven by it a hundred times and admired its beautiful buildings and sweeping landscapes, and figured, why the heck not go see it?
It was a nightmare. Like a real-life Disneyland, but creepy and tacky. Everything inside it was PINK. Unbelievably pink; I can't make this stuff up. See?
This was their main dining room. The waiters and waitresses who serve you are dressed up like they work at the Matterhorn.
Walls are either painted hot pink or covered in VELVET WALLPAPER. I had inadvertently chosen to wear a pink t-shirt that afternoon, so I blended right in. And I'm not kidding:

Gilded, flocked, and leafed. Oh and pink marble.
The table sugar was even pink! Nobody can accuse this decorator of not committing to the theme.

I got some decorating ideas! haha, not.

  1. Yeah, but did you have their steak? They don't give you a steak knife because it's THAT tender! And of course, you're supposed to check out the waterfall wall in the mens restroom--I bet you didn't (?). We stayed there one time in the American Beauty (rose) room. Fun experience.

    1. Haha actaully, Tim took a picture of the waterfall to show me, such a trip! And we'd heard the food was good but their dining room was closed--it was right between lunch and dinner. But still, it's a unique place!

  2. We used to go there for laughs and pictures when I lived in SLO ....Steve and I even booked a night there once and had a huge ROCK WALL (Boulders is more like it) in our bedroom with a jacuzzi at the bottom of it. Really strange and I don't know how they manage to keep this decor but it's such an oddity people come from all around. A.L.

  3. Zomgah...you went through there but didn't have any cake?!? My parents used to drive to 3 hours to SLO when we were kids just for the pink champagne cake. It's got giant curls of white chocolate in their signature pink color all over it too. Now my family lives a lot closer so they go for cake and coffee on my dad's birthday every year but since I live far away I always miss out. I'm totally with you on the decor though. It hasn't changed in decades.

    1. haha the cake looked UH-MAZING, but it was right between lunch and dinner and the thought of that much sugar (even split between the two of us) just sounded overwhelming. But how can you go wrong with pink champagne cake?!? haha

  4. Hahahahaha, I just laughed out loud during stillness, which would have been awkward but then i showed everyone the photos and they laughed too. My parents did the same thing you guys did a few months ago, they figured they would just try it out on their way down to LA and my mom just kept saying it was a trip...but the food was good :)
